Notes on references:

Most references are in an abbreviated form:

first author's last name, article title, journal name, journal volume, first page number, and year of publication.

[info in brackets are my comments, not part of the title]

Articles without an author listed are mostly news articles written by staff writers referring to science articles. These often make a good introduction to the journal article

Authored articles titles beginning with a heading like "Geophysics:" or "Global Change:" followed by a subtitle are typically News and Views or Perspective articles written by a scientist summarizing and commenting on the key findings of a paper or set of related papers. These may also make good companions to science articles.
