WHY DO FIELDWORK?

In order to meet the New York state regulations for teacher certification, all students seeking certification after January 2004 are required to complete at least 100 clock hours of field experiences related to coursework, prior to student teaching.

In addition to meeting the New York State Education Department certification requirements, the required 100 hours of field work creates better prepared and more informed teacher candidates. You will have hands-on experiences in actual classroom settings, allowing you to build your resume, make professional contacts for later job placement opportunities, and ensuring that you are fully comfortable with your choice of professional career.

WHAT TYPES OF FIELDWORK ARE REQUIRED?

Your fieldwork experiences should be designed to provide you with exposure to a variety of communities and a range of student developmental levels, within your desired certification area. You must seek out experiences in high need schools, working with one or more of the following student populations:

HOW DO I FIND FIELDWORK?

This website has been designed to assist you in finding fieldwork placements to meet the requirements of your courses each semester. This site provides information on conducting your own needs assessment, i.e. – what fieldwork requirements must you fulfill this semester, and what can you offer to schools?

There is also information on how to network, contact schools, and conduct the fieldwork - how to maintain a positive relationship with a potential future employer! We have included a database of possible fieldwork sites, to help you begin your search. The information in this database has been contributed by students and faculty and will be updated throughout the year.

To find professionally useful and stimulating fieldwork opportunities, it is important to complete each of the steps outlined below…

WHAT IF I CAN'T FIND FIELDWORK?

You should be able to locate appropriate fieldwork experiences within 3-4 weeks, if you follow the steps outlined above. If you have contacted at least 6 sites over the course of a month, and have not experienced success, please download and complete a fieldwork application. Send this to Dr. Michelle Y. Szpara at michelle.szpara@liu.edu, for assistance in finding a fieldwork site.
