Curriculum Vitae

Dr. Piro is presently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the School of Education at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. He teaches courses in Educational Psychology and Curriculum and Assessment. His research focuses on issues in curriculum and instruction, teacher practice, the impact of the arts on learning and issues in brain and learning behavior. He has served in a variety of capacities in the New York City Department of Education including coordinating a district-wide gifted and talented program and a cultural arts program. He is also a curriculum consultant for the Center for Gifted Youth at LIU. Presently, he serves on the New York State AGATE (Advocacy for Gifted and Talented Education) Board of Directors and is also a member of an Advisory Committee for the New York State Education Department that is working to establish teacher certification guidelines for teachers of the gifted. He has received fellowships and awards from the Japan Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Gilder-Lehrman Foundation, the Getty Center and the Fulbright organization to develop curriculum and teacher training projects in the humanities and social sciences.
