Long Island University’s Accounting Society

Overview of Purpose, Membership, and Requirements

Long Island University -- C.W. Post Campus Accounting Society was established in 1966. It acts as a liaison between students and the accounting profession. It provides opportunities for self-development, community service, and association among its members and professionals. It is supported by the University and must report all of its activities to Office of Student Life. To remain in good standing with the University, the following is a list of activities mandated by the Office of Student Life. Failure to comply with these requirements leads to an automatic reduction in the budget and possibly budget freeze or loss.

  1. Weekly Student Government Association Meetings: At least two members of the accounting society must attend weekly student government association meetings. The meetings are held every Tuesday throughout the academic year and last for approximately one hour. In addition to serving as a networking opportunity for the various clubs/organizations, these issue-based meetings discuss a wide-range of topics including campus food, campus security, leadership events, community service opportunities, co-sponsored student clubs/organization events, and budgeting.

  1. Club Fairs: The Office of Student Life hosts two club fairs a year (one per semester). The purpose of these four-hour club fairs is to recruit students into the various student organizations. At least two members of the accounting society must attend these fairs and be prepared to discuss the organization with club fair attendees.

  1. Summer Orientation: To welcome incoming C.W. Post students, the University hosts two summer orientations (one in July and another in August). Similar to the Club Fairs, at least two members of the accounting society must attend these fairs and be prepared to discuss the organization with club fair attendees.

  1. Leadership Retreats: The Office of Student Life requires that all clubs/organizations attend three leadership retreats.
    1. Fall Leadership Retreat: Five-hour retreat held each fall
    2. Spring Leadership Retreat: Five-hour retreat held each spring
    3. Summer Weekend Leadership Retreat: 3 days/2 night retreat held at the end of August

  1. Community Service Events: All clubs/organizations must host two community service events a year with at least 20% of members in attendance. The Office of Student Life requires pre-approval of the community service event and documentation that the event took place including pictures, name of attendees, and a one-page evaluation.

  1. Programs: All clubs/organizations are required to hold three programs a year. These programs must be open to all C.W. Post Students. At least one of these programs needs to take place over a weekend. Similar to the community service requirement, these programs require pre-approval and documentation that the event took place including pictures, name of attendees, and evaluation. In addition, flyers created for the event must be stamped by a member of the Office of Student Life and posted throughout campus.

  1. Fundraising Activities: Each club/organization is required to raise 5% of its annual budget and must document how this was done.

  1. Budget and Appropriations: The Office of Student Activities determines the amount of funds that they will provide to each student organization. As such, each spring semester, the accounting society must complete a comprehensive Budget and Appropriations Packet. This packets presents the events that the organization would like to host in the upcoming academic year and specifies (in an extreme detail) the approximate cost involved. The Budget is reviewed by the University’s Budget and Appropriations Committee. The accounting society is then required to attend a hearing to discuss the requests.
