The Department of Mathematics annually recognizes outstanding achievement in mathematics by presenting the following awards at the Awards Day ceremony during Graduation Weekend each Spring.
For SeniorsA complete list of award recipients since 1963 is included at the bottom of this page.
The Department regularly nominates outstanding mathematics majors for appropriate College and University awards and our students have a long tradition of winning the Dean's Scholarship Award and the C.W. Post Award for Academic Excellence.
Students with outstanding academic achievement in mathematics are elected each year to membership in the New York Lambda Chapter of the Kappa Mu Epsilon Mathematics Honor Society.
The Claire F. Adler Award in Mathematics honors the late Dr. Claire F. Adler.

Professor Adler earned her A.B. (1918) and A.M. (1919) from West Virginia University and her Ph.D. (1942) from New York University with a thesis on minimal surfaces written under the direction of Richard Courant. Some of her results appeared in her article "An isoperimetric problem with an inequality" on pages 59-69 of the American Mathematical Monthly, Volume 52 (1945). Her textbook on Modern Geometry (McGraw-Hill, 1958) was reviewed by S.R. Struik as "an inspiring book to the prospective teacher." She came to C.W. Post as an associate professor in 1961 and when she retired in 1967 she held the rank of full professor. Called the "Math Club Award" prior to 1972, the Claire F. Adler Award in Mathematics has been given annually since 1963 and the names of the recipients are engraved on a plaque now hanging in the Department of Mathematics office in Life Science Room 240. |

The Lena Sharney Memorial Award in Mathematics honors the memory of Dr. Lena Sharney.
Professor Sharney earned her A.B., M.S., and Ph.D. from New York University and did much of her work under the direction of Harold Shapiro. She came to C.W. Post as an associate professor in 1968 after working on the mathematics of multiple pool analysis of metabolic pathways in the hematology department of Mt. Sinai Hospital. She died in January 1975 shortly after retiring and her many friends and colleagues subsequently established the endowment in her name that funds the Lena Sharney Memorial Award in Mathematics, which has been given annually since 1993.
