My manual for cataloging music using AACR2 had an interesting lifespan. The first edition was titled Cataloging Music: A Manual for Use with AACR2, and was published in 1983. I remember clearly preparing the camera-ready copy on the IBM Selectric in my office in the music library at the University of Illinois. The second edition was published in 1986, and was created on my brand new Kaypro personal computer.
The third edition was prepared with the help of Taras Pavlovsky. We changed the title at that point, because reviewers kept complaining the book wasn't about cataloging, because it included nothing about subject cataloging. So was born: Describing Music Materials: A Manual for Descriptive Cataloging of Printed and Recorded Music, Music Videos, and Archival Music Collections for Use with AACR2 and APPM. Published in 1997, the book has been out of print since the end of Soldier Creek Press in 2003.
I have tried repeatedly to find a publisher to take on all of the books in the Soldier Creek Music [Cataloging] Series and it just seems that I am not the one to be able to make that happen. I know the book is still of interest, although it is out of date, so with the assistance of LIU's IT department I have had it scanned and readers are welcome to download copies. The copyright is still mine, so I would ask that you respect that by limiting your use of the text to those uses permitted under the fair use provisions.
