A TYPICAL PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS PURSUING A B.S. DEGREE
IN FORENSIC SCIENCE

The Bachelor of Science in Forensic Science is a jointly sponsored program by the Department of Chemistry, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Department of Biomedical Sciences, School of Health Professions and Nursing.

In addition to the University core requirements, students studying for this degree complete the following chemistry courses: Principles of Chemistry (CHM 3, 4), Organic Chemistry (CHM 21, 22), Quantitative Analysis (CHM 37), Forensic Instrumentation (CHM 39) and Basic Biochemistry (CHM 71).  Students will also complete the following medical biology courses:   Introduction to Criminalistics (HSMB 71), Immunology (HSMB 80), Toxicology (HSMB 255), Diagnostic Techniques in Molecular Pathology (HSMB 256), Forensic Molecular Techniques (HSMB 257) and Forensic Science Internship (HSMB 271); the following sociology/anthropology course:  Forensic Anthropology (ANP 51); the following biology courses:  Mechanisms of Life Processes (BIO 103), Strategies of Life (BIO 104), Principles of Genetics (BIO 138) and Biostatistics (BIO 141); the following criminal justice course:  Criminal Procedure (CRJ 76) and the following physics courses:  College Physics (PHY 11, 12) or University Physics (PHY 3, 4).

Several electives are suggested that will provide students with specialized knowledge in various areas of forensic science:  Molecular Biology (BIO 155), Microbiology (BIO 135) or Microbiology in Health Sciences (HSMB 90), Hematology and Phlebotomy (HSMB 63), Journal Club Seminar (HSMB 244), Spectroscopic Identification of Organic Compounds (CHM 24), Forensic Psychology and the Violent Criminal (CRJ 35) or Forensic Psychology: the Law and Human Behavior (PSY 43), Pharmacology (HSMB 51) and Arson Investigation (CRJ 47).
